About This Anchorage

Nabeul is Tunisia's pottery capital — renowned throughout the Mediterranean for centuries of ceramic and tile production using traditional methods. The Friday pottery market is one of Tunisia's great market experiences, drawing buyers from across the region for hand-painted faience, glazed tiles, and terracotta. The ancient Phoenician city of Neapolis stood here — discovered underwater off the coast after the 365 AD earthquake that submerged parts of the coastline. Nabeul's beach is long, sandy, and relatively quiet compared to Hammamet. The anchorage off the town is a pleasant overnight stop for those exploring the Cap Bon coast by sea rather than by marina, with the pottery market and a lively local souk within easy walking distance.

Hazards

  • !Bay exposed to N and NE — in northerly conditions above F3, leave for Hammamet immediately
  • !Submerged Neapolis ruins offshore — some charts mark the site; avoid anchoring in the charted area approx 300m north of town
  • !Fishing nets in bay — active fishing boats set nets close to shore; approach with caution at night
  • !Shallow fishing harbour entrance (1.5–2m) — check current depths before entering; silting reported
  • !Friday market brings large crowds ashore — additional dinghy and small boat traffic in the bay

Skipper's Tips

  • The Friday pottery market in Nabeul is unmissable — hand-painted tiles, bowls, and tagines at excellent prices; arrive by 8am for best selection
  • The submerged ruins of ancient Neapolis can be snorkelled in calm, clear conditions — ask local divers for the exact site location
  • Nabeul is an excellent day stop from Hammamet marina — anchor for lunch and market, return to marina for the night
  • Fresh fish from the market boats is excellent — bargain for the day's catch in the morning
  • Local pottery prices are significantly cheaper here than in Tunis souks or Hammamet tourist shops
