What is an anchor alarm app?
An anchor alarm app uses your phone's GPS to monitor your boat's position while at anchor. If the boat drifts beyond a set safe radius — meaning the anchor may be dragging — the app sounds a loud alarm to alert you immediately, even while you're sleeping.
Does Safety Anchor Alarm work in the background?
Yes. Safety Anchor Alarm continues monitoring your position even when the app is in the background or your screen is locked. This is essential for overnight anchoring when your phone may be idle for hours.
How accurate is GPS anchor monitoring?
Modern iPhone GPS is typically accurate to 3-5 meters in open conditions. Safety Anchor Alarm lets you set your safe radius to account for this — a 40-meter radius, for example, gives you plenty of margin while still detecting genuine anchor drag early.
Does the app drain my battery?
Safety Anchor Alarm is optimized for low battery usage with configurable location update intervals. You can choose between 1-second updates (very precise, higher battery) and 15-second updates (economic, lower battery). We recommend keeping your phone plugged in while anchoring overnight.
Is Safety Anchor Alarm free?
Yes, Safety Anchor Alarm is completely free to download and use. There are no subscriptions, in-app purchases, or hidden fees. All features including GPS monitoring, anchor points, calculators, and the lock screen widget are included.
Do I need internet to use the app?
No internet connection is required for the core anchor alarm functionality. GPS works independently of cellular or Wi-Fi connections. However, map tiles may require a connection to load initially. Once loaded, the alarm monitoring works fully offline.
What scope ratio should I use when anchoring?
For all-chain rode, use at least 5:1 in calm conditions, 7:1 for moderate weather (recommended standard), and 10:1 in heavy weather. For chain-and-rope combinations, add 1-2 extra to these ratios. Can I save my favorite anchorages?
Yes. The Anchor Points feature automatically logs every anchoring session with date, time, location, radius used, and duration. You can name and edit these points to build your personal anchorage library and return to trusted spots.
