About This Anchorage

Hammamet is Tunisia's premier sailing destination — a modern, well-managed marina at the southern tip of Cap Bon peninsula with 750 berths, facilities exceeding most Mediterranean marinas, and easy access to Hammamet's historic medina and beach resort strip. Marina Yasmine is unusual in the Mediterranean in accepting superyachts up to 110m LOA alongside cruising boats. Its 150-tonne travel lift is the largest in North Africa. The marina town of Yasmine Hammamet was purpose-built around the marina and has numerous restaurants, supermarkets, and chandleries. Hammamet proper (3km south) has a preserved Arab medina and kasbah dating to the 15th century, excellent local restaurants, and some of Tunisia's best beaches. Cap Bon is the strategic turning point for passages north to Malta (190nm) and Sicily (150nm).

Restrictions: No anchoring inside the marina basin without permission. Max draft 4m in marina. Speed limit 3 knots in marina. Sirocco departures: marina recommends 6-hour buffer after Sirocco onset before departure.

Hazards

  • !Sirocco (Chili) arrives fast from SE at Cap Bon — Cap Bon location makes this a critical concern; build 6-hour buffer into all northbound departures
  • !Heavy tourist ferry traffic in summer — ferry crossing to Malta operates from Kelibia (nearby); monitor traffic
  • !190nm to Malta, 150nm to Sicily — plan with full weather routing and adequate fuel reserves
  • !Summer heat (35–42°C) combined with Sirocco dust reduces visibility and crew comfort — depart early morning
  • !Marina full July–August — book berthing in advance; outer bay anchorage more exposed to NE swell

Skipper's Tips

  • Marina Yasmine is the best provisioning stop in Tunisia — supermarkets, chandlery, laundry, wifi all at hand
  • 150-tonne travel lift — best haul-out facility in North Africa; reasonable rates; English-speaking staff
  • Hammamet medina (3km by taxi) is beautifully preserved — evening meal in the medina restaurants is excellent value
  • For Malta/Sicily passages, use Kelibia (40nm east) as final departure point — closer to the crossing
  • The Cap Bon peninsula road is Tunisia's most scenic drive — rent a car for a day to explore the olive groves, vineyards, and Roman ruins
