About This Anchorage

Mount Hartman Bay is one of Grenada's finest anchorages — a deep, mangrove-backed bay on the southwest coast that provides virtually complete protection from all directions. The bay is used as a hurricane hole, with soft mud providing exceptional holding for anchors. GCMA mooring buoys are available and well-maintained. The bay is quiet and beautiful, with mangroves lining the eastern shore and the hills of the Mt. Hartman estate rising above. There are minimal facilities ashore — this is a nature anchorage rather than a service stop. The main attraction is the outstanding calm, the beauty of the setting, and the sense of complete shelter. Hog Island is a short dinghy ride east, and Prickly Bay (with all its facilities) is 2nm northeast. Mount Hartman Bay is the preferred overnight stop for sailors who want complete peace without marina costs.

Hazards

  • !Soft mud: anchor must penetrate the surface layer — drag can occur in very soft spots if anchor is not set properly
  • !No facilities in bay — self-sufficient; provision before arrival
  • !Mangrove areas: anchor in open water, not in the mangrove roots or shallow edges

Skipper's Tips

  • The best protected overnight anchorage in south Grenada — completely calm in virtually all conditions including fresh trades
  • Use a GCMA mooring if available — mooring is well-set in soft mud and avoids disturbing the bottom
  • Dinghy to Hog Island (0.5nm E) for the beach bar and BBQ atmosphere
  • Perfect base for day trips: Prickly Bay 2nm E for chandlery and services; Grand Anse 3nm N for beach and provisioning
  • The mud bottom means the water is never as crystal-clear as the sand anchorages — visibility is lower but holding is superb
