About This Anchorage

Snappertuna's flat granite coastline represents the characteristic geology of the outer SW Finnish archipelago — low-lying, wave-polished slabs of ancient bedrock rising barely above water level, with patches of sand and mud between the outcrops giving anchorage. The landscape has an austere beauty: the flat skerries merge seamlessly with the Baltic horizon, and the silence is remarkable. It is a fair-weather anchorage suited to calm summer nights when the SW archipelago is at its most magical. The village of Snappertuna a few kilometres inland has a medieval stone church — an unusual find in an area otherwise defined by wooden buildings.
