About This Anchorage

Vormsi is one of the most historically poignant islands in Estonia. For centuries it was home to the Estonian Swedes — a community of Swedish-speaking fishermen and farmers who had lived here since the 13th century. In September 1944, as Soviet forces advanced, virtually the entire population (about 2,500 people) fled to Sweden in one dramatic mass evacuation. The island was left nearly empty. Today fewer than 300 people live here, but the Swedish cultural legacy remains — Swedish place names, a remarkable medieval church, and the characteristic 'wheel cross' limestone grave markers. The island's landscape of limestone pavement, juniper heath, and ancient meadows is exceptionally beautiful and largely protected.
