About This Anchorage
Haapsalu is one of Estonia's most atmospheric small towns — a 19th-century spa resort that attracted Russian nobility and where Tchaikovsky famously spent a summer. The medieval Episcopal Castle (13th century) dominates the town, and the restored wooden villas along the promenade give Haapsalu an exceptionally well-preserved Victorian-era atmosphere. The town is famous for its therapeutic black mud, harvested from the bay and used in spa treatments since the early 1800s. The Haapsalu narrow-gauge railway was once the longest narrow-gauge line in the Baltic states. For sailors, the town provides a charming contrast to island isolation — full provisions, restaurants, and easy access to the Hiiumaa and Vormsi ferries.
