About This Anchorage

Pomorie is an ancient town on a narrow peninsula — the site of the Greek colony of Anchialos (founded 6th century BC), later an important Byzantine salt-trading centre. The Pomorie Salt Lake, separated from the Black Sea by the narrow peninsula, is one of Bulgaria's most significant natural and industrial sites — commercial salt production has continued here since antiquity, and the lake also provides the mineral-rich black mud used in Pomorie's famous therapeutic tradition. The mud baths have been a health destination since Roman times. The town retains considerable architectural character, having been rebuilt after a catastrophic fire in 1906. The bay anchorage provides access to a historically rich and characterful town well off the main tourist circuit.
