About This Anchorage
Anchoring off the Nesebar peninsula delivers one of the most remarkable views in all of Black Sea sailing — the ancient city of Messembria (founded 510 BC by Greek colonists) rising from its rocky promontory, its silhouette defined by the ruins of 40+ medieval churches packed into just 0.7 square kilometres. Nesebar's UNESCO World Heritage designation (1983) recognises an extraordinary concentration of Byzantine and Bulgarian medieval architecture: the Basilica of St Sofia, the Church of Christ Pantocrator, the Church of St John the Baptist — each a masterwork of brick-and-stone craftsmanship. The Old Town has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years. From the anchorage, the sight of the city rising from the sea, connected to the mainland by its narrow sand causeway, is exactly as ancient mariners would have seen it. The summer tourist crowds on the causeway are a reminder of how popular this site has become — but from the water, the view is timeless.
