Teos Körfezi Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Teos Bay, Ancient Teos Anchorage
Teos Bay lies in front of the ancient Greek city of Teos — birthplace of the lyric poet Anacreon and home to a magnificent temple dedicated to Dionysus, the largest Ionic temple in Asia Minor. The anchorage is on clean sand with clear water, and on a calm morning you can see the temple columns from the cockpit. This is one of the most culturally rewarding day stops on the northern Aegean coast — snorkel, swim, then take the dinghy ashore and walk 15 minutes to the ruins. Overnight is possible in settled northerly conditions; if any southerly is in the forecast, use Sığacık Marina 2nm away.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
60m in the main bay anchorage. Teos Bay is best used as a daytime stop for visiting the ruins, or for overnight when N/NE winds are settled. The bay opens to the south and west — any southerly or westerly swell makes it rolly. Sığacık Marina is only 2nm away and provides secure overnight shelter.
Set this in Safety Anchor Alarm — FreeThe Anchorage
Anchor in 4–8m in the clear sand bay directly in front of the ancient Teos ruins. Excellent holding. Exposed to W, SW, and S — suitable for day use and overnight in settled northerly conditions. The temple of Dionysus is visible from the anchorage.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Teos Körfezi is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 3–10m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (70m chain at 10m depth).
- Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.
Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Teos Körfezi are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to W and SW and S winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below for the night.60m in the main bay anchorage. Teos Bay is best used as a daytime stop for visiting the ruins, or for overnight when N/NE winds are settled. The bay opens to the south and west — any southerly or westerly swell makes it rolly. Sığacık Marina is only 2nm away and provides secure overnight shelter.
Best May–June and September–October as a day stop or settled overnight. July–August is fine for daytime visits but meltemi direction makes overnight variable — Sığacık Marina is the better overnight base in summer.
Navigation Hazards
- W/SW/S exposure — bay opens to south and west; any southerly or westerly swell renders anchorage uncomfortable
- Submerged archaeological remains near the ancient harbour area — use your chartplotter and avoid anchoring close to the NE shore
- No facilities — carry all provisions; nearest fuel and water at Sığacık (2nm)
Rules & Regulations
- Permit: Not required
- Anchoring fee: Free
- Restrictions: No anchoring over the submerged remains of the ancient harbour mole (marked on some charts as a shallow area NE of the bay). Respect the archaeological site — no digging ashore.

Skipper's Tips
- Arrive early morning when the sea is flat — an hour ashore at the Teos ruins (free entry in off-season) before heading south
- The water is exceptionally clear for snorkelling — check your anchor visually while swimming
- If wind is building from the SW by afternoon, pull anchor and head 2nm north to Sığacık Marina for a secure overnight
- Bring a picnic — there are no facilities ashore, but the ruins provide spectacular shade under the remaining columns
A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Teos Körfezi
