Best Anchorages Around İzmir & Foça
İzmir Bay and the Foça coastline offer historic anchorages, a designated monk seal reserve, and excellent marina facilities at Sığacık. These 8 anchorages have been verified for depth, bottom type, and wind protection — each with a tailored anchor alarm radius recommendation.
About the İzmir & Foça Region
Prevailing Wind
Meltemi from the NW, typically 10:00–18:00 from June to September, 15–25 knots (occasionally 30+ kt). İzmir Bay itself is more sheltered than the open Aegean but commercial shipping creates additional hazards. Foça headland provides some wind shadow for the inner bays.
Best Season
May–June and September–October for settled conditions. July–August is manageable but the meltemi runs daily and the outer anchorages (Büyük Deniz, Teos Bay) can be rolly. Küçük Deniz inner harbour and Sığacık Marina stay calm in all meltemi conditions.
Shipping Traffic
İzmir Bay carries heavy commercial shipping to and from İzmir Port (Turkey's third-largest port). Monitor VHF 16 continuously when underway in the bay. Do not anchor in the commercial shipping channels — marked on all charts.
Base Ports
İzmir Alsancak Marina is the main city base. Sığacık Marina (Teos area) is the best-equipped small marina on this coast — excellent facilities, fuel, and access to the ancient city of Teos. Reserve ahead for July–August.
Foça Special Environmental Protection Area — Mediterranean Monk Seal Habitat
Foça and the surrounding rocky islets (Orak Adaları) form a designated ÖÇKB (Special Environmental Protection Area) for the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) — one of the world's most endangered marine mammals. When anchoring near Foça, approach sea caves and rocky outcrops at idle speed only; do not approach cave entrances within 50m. The Turkish Coast Guard enforces these restrictions. The monk seal is a protected species under Turkish law — any disturbance is a serious offence.
İzmir commercial shipping: İzmir Bay has designated commercial shipping lanes. Never anchor within these lanes (marked on all electronic charts). Monitor VHF 16 when underway in the bay.
Meltemi July–August: The NW meltemi reaches 25+ knots daily in this region. Outer anchorages (Büyük Deniz, Teos Bay) become uncomfortable in strong meltemi. Use Küçük Deniz inner harbour (shoal-draught only) or Sığacık Marina for secure meltemi-proof overnight shelter.
