Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

70m

70m alarm radius for 3–5m on sand/gravel with fair holding. This is a temporary anchorage — not suitable for unsupervised overnight stays unless the forecast is firmly settled and N/NW swell-free. Always have an alternative plan (Varberg harbour gästhamn). Set alarm to 65m minimum, check holding with a short burst of reverse throttle before leaving the boat.

About This Anchorage

Varberg Roads offers a dramatic temporary anchorage directly below the medieval Varberg Fortress — one of the best-preserved 13th–14th century fortifications on the Swedish west coast. The fortress houses the famous Bocksten Man (a 14th-century bog body) in its museum. The town of Varberg is a pleasant Victorian-era spa resort with a historic open-air sea bath (Kallbadhuset), restaurants, and full provisions. The anchorage is primarily used by boats transiting the Swedish west coast — a lunch stop or overnight wait for a weather window. The harbour gästhamn is the preferred overnight option when N/NW conditions are uncertain.

Best Months & Season

June, July, August

June–August primary. Transitional anchorage for west coast passages — rarely a destination in itself. The Halland coast between Varberg and Malmö is mainly a transit area for boats bound for the Danish straits or Baltic. Autumn weather makes the exposed roads untenable by September.
