Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m

60m radius appropriate for 3–5m depth on mud/sand. Shorten to 50m in light airs with confirmed holding. SW swell can make the anchorage rolly — set a stern anchor or use the gästhamn if swell is forecast. Car-free island means no engine noise ashore.

About This Anchorage

Styrsö is one of the southern islands in the Gothenburg archipelago — a car-free, scenic island reachable by ferry from Saltholmen in 20 minutes. The island has a small village with a bakery, restaurant, and typical red Bohuslän wooden houses. As the southernmost of the major inhabited Gothenburg islands, Styrsö marks the transition from the sheltered inner archipelago to the more exposed outer approaches. The anchorage offers good protection from the north and east, making it a comfortable overnight stop in settled summer weather. From Styrsö you can explore the chain of southern archipelago islands — Donsö, Vrångö, Köpstadsö — by dinghy or kayak.

Skipper's Tips

  • Take the ferry from Saltholmen (Gothenburg) — scenic 20-minute ride through inner archipelago
  • Best anchorage is N of the main pier in NE-E winds; shift to the N cove if SW swell arrives
  • Bakery on the island makes excellent kanelbullar (cinnamon rolls) — dinghy ashore before 09:00
  • Explore the chain of southern islands by dinghy — Donsö (5 min S) has better provisions
  • Listen to Swedish Maritime Radio weather forecasts (Channel 78) each morning
