About This Anchorage
Baliceaux is a small, uninhabited island privately owned but accessible to visiting yachts as a remote anchorage between Bequia and Mustique. The island holds profound historical significance: in 1796–97, the defeated Black Caribs (Garifuna people) — the original inhabitants of the Grenadines, resisting British colonisation — were held captive on Baliceaux in appalling conditions before approximately 5,000 survivors were forcibly deported to Roatan, Honduras. The Garifuna people of Central America trace their diaspora to this island. A stone monument on the island commemorates this history. As an anchorage, Baliceaux provides good shelter from the NE trades on its western side with clean sand holding. The snorkelling around the island's rocky shores is excellent — undisturbed reefs in very clear water. The island is completely self-sufficient — carry all provisions, water, and fuel. One of the most off-the-beaten-track stops in the Grenadines.
