About This Anchorage

Mamaia is Romania's premier beach resort — an 8km strip of sandy beach along a narrow barrier between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol, immediately north of Constanța. In summer, it becomes one of the busiest resort areas in southeastern Europe, with hundreds of hotels, beach clubs, water parks, and a lively nightlife scene. For visiting sailors, the northern section of Mamaia beach offers a fair-weather anchorage away from the densest swimmer concentrations. The lake immediately behind the beach (Siutghiol, meaning 'Milk Lake' in Turkish) is a freshwater/brackish lake navigable by small boats. Mamaia's resort atmosphere — the beach bars, the parasol-covered sands, the casino, the aquapark — contrasts dramatically with the wild delta landscape just 50nm to the north. This is a side of the Black Sea coast that reveals Romania's Soviet-era resort development at its most developed.
