About This Anchorage
Histria (Istros) was founded by Greek colonists from Miletus around 657 BC — making it the oldest documented urban settlement on Romanian territory and one of the oldest Greek colonies on the western Black Sea coast. The city flourished as a major commercial centre for over a millennium, trading grain, fish, and slaves with the Greek world. Its progressive burial under Danube sediment — the ancient harbour that once made Histria prosperous now lies several kilometres from the sea under metres of delta silt — is one of history's most dramatic geological stories. The archaeological museum at the site is excellent, displaying finds from six distinct historical periods. For visiting sailors, anchoring off the modern coastline and reaching Histria by dinghy, then walking to the ruins, gives this ancient city visit a maritime context its original Greek inhabitants would have recognised.
