About This Anchorage

Den Oever is one of the most strategically important sailing waypoints in the Netherlands — the western gateway between the Waddenzee (tidal North Sea) and the IJsselmeer (freshwater, non-tidal). The Stevinsluizen lock complex (named after the Dutch hydraulic engineer Simon Stevin) is operated by Rijkswaterstaat and operates to a published timetable — essential to have before arrival. The lock handles both commercial barges and recreational craft; yachts use the smaller sluizen on the south side. The Afsluitdijk (32km, built 1927–1932) that Den Oever anchors is a Dutch national monument — cycling the full length of the dyke road is a classic Dutch experience (dedicated cycle path). The fishing harbour (Vissershaven) inside the lock basin has full facilities. The monument on the dyke marks the point where the last gap was closed in 1932.
