70m on Waddenzee mud and sand in 2.5–5m. Tidal range 1.5–2.5m — use 5:1 scope and allow for tidal swing. The outer harbour is exposed to W and NW across the Waddenzee — in strong westerlies, use the inner tidal harbour or the canal harbours (limited visitor space).

About This Anchorage

Harlingen is the most important mainland port on the Dutch Wadden Sea coast — the departure point for ferry services to Terschelling and Vlieland, and the principal mainland staging harbour for sailors preparing for the Wadden crossing. The city (population 15,000) is one of the best-preserved Hanseatic trading towns in Friesland — the Noorderhaven and Zuiderhaven (canal harbours in the city centre) are flanked by 17th and 18th-century merchant houses with original gable stones. The Hannemahuis Museum covers Harlingen's maritime history as a herring and spice trading port. Harlingen is also the entrance point to the Frisian canal system — the Van Harinxmakanaal connects the harbour to Leeuwarden (25km) and thence to the entire Frisian lakes network. The harbour has comprehensive facilities and is the best fully-equipped Wadden Sea mainland base. Current Waddengids is sold here.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Outer anchorage free; inner harbour fee approx €18–24/night
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Tidal outer harbour (1.5–2.5m range); ferry traffic to Terschelling and Vlieland — large ferries manoeuvre in outer harbour; monitor VHF 11 (Harlingen Port Control); no anchoring in ferry approach channel; inner canal harbours: limited visitor space — call ahead; Van Harinxmakanaal: commercial barge traffic.

Hazards

  • !Ferry traffic (Terschelling and Vlieland ferries) in outer harbour — large vessels manoeuvre; monitor AIS and VHF 11
  • !Tidal range 1.5–2.5m in outer harbour — plan approach and departure with tide
  • !Waddenzee crossing from Harlingen to the islands requires careful tidal timing — use current Waddengids
  • !Commercial barge traffic in the Van Harinxmakanaal (Frisian canal) if continuing inland

Skipper's Tips

  • Buy the Waddengids (current year) in Harlingen before the Wadden crossing — available at the harbour chandlery; the annual tidal tables and channel positions are essential
  • The Noorderhaven (inner canal harbour) is the most atmospheric mooring — the 17th-century merchant houses with original gable stones line both sides
  • Time the departure for Terschelling or Vlieland at HW -3hrs — the flood tide carries you out through the Vliestroom channel and you arrive with sufficient water
  • Harlingen is the gateway to Leeuwarden via the Van Harinxmakanaal (25km, commercial canal) — an alternative route to the Frisian lakes avoiding the Stavoren lock
  • The Hannemahuis Museum (Voorstraat) covers Harlingen's role in the herring trade, Wadden pilotage, and maritime history — highly recommended before the Wadden crossing
