Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
65m
65m on soft IJsselmeer mud in 1–3m. Non-tidal. Very soft mud — anchor will bury deeply (good holding, but recovery needs steady pull). Exposed to W and SW — leave if wind forecast SW >15kt.
Setting Your Anchor
- Check tidal height for your arrival time using Waddengids or Rijkswaterstaat tidal tables
- Plan arrival at HW -2 for tidal locations; IJsselmeer anchorages are non-tidal — arrive any time
- Navigate daylight only in all Wadden and coastal channels; IJsselmeer night sailing permitted with care
- Set your anchor alarm immediately after anchoring — before going below or sleeping
About This Anchorage
Marken was an island in the former Zuiderzee until 1957, when a causeway connected it to the North Holland mainland. The village (population 1,900) has preserved its distinctive character from the island era — wooden houses painted green and black, built on artificial mounds (terpen) above the former floodplain, with a population that maintained traditional dress (Markense klederdracht) into the 20th century. The traditional dress is still worn at festivals and by some older residents. The lighthouse at the end of the causeway (Markerwaardlicht) is a navigation mark. Marken is a popular day-trip destination from Amsterdam (30km by road, or by ferry from Volendam in summer). The IJsselmeer/Markermeer water around Marken is shallow and offers excellent mud anchoring.

- !Limited sailing water immediately around island — extensive shallows require careful pilotage using electronic charts
Skipper's Tips
- →Marken is best visited on a weekday in May or June — tourist crowds peak on summer weekends and the village becomes very busy
- →The traditional wooden houses (terpen-built) are best seen from the water — approach by dinghy along the inner harbour channel
- →The summer ferry from Volendam to Marken (20 minutes) is scenic — if crewing, take the ferry and sail from Volendam to meet the boat
- →Dutch pancakes (poffertjes) at the harbour-side cafés are excellent — a local speciality worth the tourist setting
- →The Markermeer is a key resting area for migrating waterfowl — bring binoculars in spring and autumn for remarkable birdwatching
