About This Anchorage
Workum (Frisian: Warkum) is the traditional gateway between the IJsselmeer and the inland Frisian lakes — the Workumertrekvaart canal connects Workum harbour to the Heegermeer and thence to the full Frisian lakes network. The town (population 4,500) is one of the best-preserved Hanseatic trading towns in Friesland — the Grote Sint Gertrudiskerk (15th century, 70m tower) dominates the flat landscape and is visible from 15nm offshore on the IJsselmeer. The Workum Waag (1650) is the finest weigh house in Friesland. The Jopie Huisman Museum has the works of Jopie Huisman (1922–2000), a self-taught Frisian painter of extraordinary skill who depicted the daily life of the Frisian working poor — one of the finest regional museums in the Netherlands. The IJsselmeer dyke (Waddendijk) immediately outside the harbour is a spectacular viewpoint.

Skipper's Tips
- →The Jopie Huisman Museum (Merk 4) is the finest regional art museum in Friesland — Huisman's paintings of Frisian daily life (rag-and-bone men, farm workers, canal boats) are unsentimental and extraordinary; allow 2 hours
- →The Grote Sint Gertrudiskerk tower (70m) is visible from 15nm at sea — one of the best navigation marks on the Frisian IJsselmeer coast; the tower can be climbed in summer
- →Workum is the best entry point to the Frisian lakes via the Workumertrekvaart — the canal route to Heeg (9nm) is the most scenic and direct connection to the lakes from the IJsselmeer west coast
- →The Thursday market (Merk square) has traditional Frisian produce — local cheese (Frisian clove cheese), butter, and the ubiquitous Frisian dropje (liquorice)
- →The Waddendijk cycle route north from Workum to Makkum follows the top of the IJsselmeer dyke — extraordinary views across the open lake on one side and the polder on the other
Facilities
