About This Anchorage

Sneek (Frisian: Snits) is the undisputed sailing capital of the Netherlands — the host of the Sneekweek sailing regatta (first week of August, 800+ racing yachts, 150,000 spectators), the centre of Frisian lakes sailing culture, and the location of the most-photographed water gate in the Netherlands. The Waterpoort (1613) is a double-towered gate spanning the Geeuw canal — the symbol of Sneek and one of the finest pieces of Dutch Renaissance architecture. The city (population 34,000) is the largest in SW Friesland and has excellent provisioning, a chandlery, sailmakers, and boatyards. The Sneekermeer (4km south) is the finest open anchorage lake in the Frisian system — 5km long, 1.8m deep, with reed-fringed banks. The IFKS skutsje races pass through Sneekermeer in August.

Skipper's Tips

  • The Waterpoort (1613) is the symbol of Sneek and one of the finest water gates in the Netherlands — photograph from the canal at dawn before the tourist boats start
  • Sneekermeer (2km south via Geeuw canal) is the finest open anchorage lake in Friesland — 5km long, 1.8m depth, reed-fringed; anchor in the southern bay for best protection in SW winds
  • Avoid first week of August (Sneekweek) unless you are racing — the event is spectacular but accommodation and harbour space are impossible to find without months of advance booking
  • The IFKS skutsje sailing barges (August) are the most impressive traditional sailing event in the Netherlands — 15–20m flat-bottomed barges racing under enormous gaff rigs; photograph from the lake bank
  • Sneek has the best sailing infrastructure in Friesland — chandlery, sailmaker, and boatyard for any repairs needed before or after the lakes circuit
