Anchorages in the Maldives Southern Atolls
The most remote sailing in the Indian Ocean — Addu Atoll with its British RAF history, Fuvahmulah's tiger shark encounters, the vast Huvadhu lagoon, and Laamu's ancient Buddhist ruins. For experienced blue-water crews with full fuel reserves and satellite communications.
Southern Atolls — Advanced Blue-Water Sailing Only
These destinations are 250–450nm from Malé across open Indian Ocean passages. Your Maldives Yacht Cruising Permit must explicitly include the southern atolls — confirm at Malé before departure. Carry full fuel reserves — there are no fuel stops between Thinadhoo and Addu (250nm). SW monsoon (May–Oct) closes all southern passages — depart north before early April. Satellite communications strongly recommended. File a float plan with Malé Port Control before each passage. Fuvahmulah has no lagoon — suitable for experienced crews in absolutely settled conditions only.
