About This Anchorage
The Šyša River flows through the heart of the Nemunas Delta wetlands before entering the Curonian Lagoon, and its mouth provides a natural anchorage sheltered by the river banks and the extensive reed beds of the surrounding delta. The anchorage sits at the transition between the open lagoon and the enclosed river world, giving sailors the option to explore either environment. The Šyša is navigable by small vessels with shallow draft for several kilometres upstream toward the market town of Šilutė, the largest settlement in the Nemunas Delta region. The river mouth anchorage is in 1.5–3.5m on mud and sand bottom with excellent holding — the characteristic delta mud of the Nemunas system provides some of the most reliable anchoring in Lithuania. The surrounding wetlands are part of the Nemunas Delta Regional Park, with strict nature protection rules that reward respectful visitors with extraordinary birdlife: white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers, ospreys, and in late summer the spectacular gathering of common cranes that stop in the delta on autumn migration. The area is deeply traditional — small fishing boats work the lagoon and river channels using methods handed down over generations.
