About This Anchorage
Rusne Island (Rusnė) is the heart of the Nemunas Delta — the main inhabited island in this extraordinary wetland world where Lithuania's longest river splits into a maze of channels, reed beds, and oxbow lakes before reaching the Curonian Lagoon. The island has been inhabited for centuries, its flat landscape shaped by flood management dykes and drainage channels that give the delta a distinctly Netherlandish appearance. The anchorage off the island village is in excellent mud holding — the deep, black mud of the delta is one of the most reliable anchoring bottoms in the Baltic region. The Nemunas Delta Regional Park protects the entire area, and the birdlife is extraordinary: white-tailed eagles fish in the channels, black storks nest in the surrounding alder swamp, and vast flocks of waders move through on migration. The village of Rusne has a small harbour, a fish smokehouse, and a few guesthouses catering to ecotourists and canoe expeditions. The island is connected to the mainland by a road bridge, but the delta world is best experienced from the water — by dinghy through the labyrinthine channels. This is one of the most remote and rewarding anchorages in all of Lithuania.
