The Šilutė River approach anchorage is the most accessible of the Nemunas Delta anchorages for sailors needing provisions, repairs, or rest after exploring the remote delta channels. Šilutė — the largest town in the delta region, with a population of around 20,000 — lies 2 nautical miles upstream and can be reached by dinghy in calm river conditions, giving access to supermarkets, fuel stations, cafes, and the town's services. The river anchorage itself is sheltered on all sides by the channel banks, with excellent mud holding and calm water regardless of conditions in the open lagoon. The Šilutė area has a fascinating history as the former Heydekrug in East Prussia — the town has a distinctive Germanic architectural character from its Prussian past, and the local museum documents the complex history of the Memel Territory (Klaipėda Region) that changed hands repeatedly between Germany and Lithuania in the 20th century. The river approach to the town passes through typical delta farmland with stork nests on telephone poles and eagle sightings over the meadows. This anchorage is the practical hub of delta sailing — close enough to civilisation for reprovisioning but retaining the peaceful river character of the delta.
