About This Anchorage

The Atmata is one of the main distributary arms of the Nemunas River, carrying a substantial portion of the river's flow through the delta wetlands before entering the Curonian Lagoon. Anchoring in the Atmata gives access to one of the Delta's principal navigable channels, with depths of 2–5m over superb delta mud that holds an anchor as firmly as any seabed in the Baltic. The river here is 20–40m wide, with banks lined by alder, willow, and ash that have grown over the dykes built to manage the delta flooding for centuries. The Nemunas Delta was historically one of the most productive fishing regions in the eastern Baltic, and remnants of traditional fish traps, weir structures, and ancient eel passages are occasionally visible along the banks. The current Nemunas Delta is a protected wetland of international significance, hosting breeding populations of globally threatened species including the great snipe and the aquatic warbler. The water in the Atmata is dark from upstream tannins, its surface often reflecting the gallery forest above in a perfect mirror when the river is still. At dawn, otters swim across from bank to bank, and the kingfisher is a constant flash of blue along the wooded stretches.
