About This Anchorage

The outer Baltic coast south of the Klaipėda Strait is the open-sea face of the Curonian Spit at its most elemental — a continuous wall of forested sand dunes rising from the sea, with no settlements, no harbours, and no shelter whatsoever from the prevailing westerly winds of the Baltic. The anchorage in 4–12m on sand provides a brief stopping point in settled conditions for vessels making coastal passages along the spit's outer face, or for those seeking to experience the spit's wild Baltic side before transiting to the lagoon. The dune landscape here is visually overwhelming — the combination of the open sea, the continuous dune ridge, and the complete absence of human development creates one of the most dramatic coastal scenes in the eastern Baltic. The beach on the spit's Baltic face is accessible only by boat, and landing by dinghy in settled conditions reveals a pristine sand beach extending for miles in both directions. The UNESCO World Heritage status of the Curonian Spit reflects the extraordinary quality of this landscape. This anchorage is for experienced sailors only — open coast, no shelter, no support, and quickly dangerous in any westerly.
