Anchorages on the Lithuanian Baltic Coast
Lithuanian Baltic Coast — fair-weather coastal sailing only
Lithuania's 90km Baltic coastline is entirely exposed to western and northwestern swells from the open Baltic. Every anchorage on this coast is a fair-weather proposition only — in any wind above F3–4 from W or NW, all coastal anchorages become untenable. The Klaipėda Strait (access to the sheltered Curonian Lagoon) provides the only coastal shelter. Always have a clear escape plan before anchoring on this coast, and monitor weather forecasts continuously. The nearest secure shelter in deteriorating conditions is the Šventoji harbour in the north or the Klaipėda Strait in the south. The reward: some of the most beautiful amber beaches in the Baltic, the iconic Palanga resort, and an unspoiled wild coastline.
