Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

85m

85m in 5–8m on excellent sand/mud holding. This is one of the better-holding anchorages on the Tyrrhenian Calabrian coast — the mud layer provides good grip. However, the bay is wide and exposed to the south; in any Scirocco or Libeccio, the swell builds quickly. Always check the 48-hour forecast before committing to an overnight here. Nicotera Marina's small port may have berths for smaller yachts in emergency.

About This Anchorage

Nicotera Bay is a wide, open bay on the lower Tyrrhenian Calabrian coast, south of the hilltop town of Nicotera (which retains its medieval castello and historic centre). The bay offers some of the best sand and mud holding on this stretch of coast and serves as a practical staging point between Capo Vaticano and the Strait of Messina. The hilltop town is visible above the bay and worth a brief visit — the Museo Civico di Nicotera holds an important collection of Magna Graecia artefacts. The Scogli d'Isca marine protected area sits just north of the bay around a cluster of rocky islets — an important habitat for posidonia and marine fauna. Nicotera Marina (the lower port district) has a small fishing harbour.

Setting Your Anchor

Calabrian anchorages vary from excellent sand to mixed rock — always verify holding by backing down firmly before leaving the boat unattended. In the Capo Rizzuto AMP, anchoring on Posidonia carries fines of €500–€3,000 — confirm sandy bottom visually or by snorkel. Posidonia prohibition applies in all Italian waters. In the Strait of Messina area, current load on the anchor can be equivalent to a Force 4 wind — use a minimum 5:1 scope and back down at engine speed to simulate current load.

Overnight Anchoring

Overnight anchoring on the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast requires a firm Libeccio contingency plan. Libeccio (W/SW) can reach Force 6–7 within hours with little warning — ensure you have an escape route to Porto Vibo Marina or another sheltered harbour. On the Ionian coast, Scirocco (SE/S) from the open Mediterranean can build quickly. Near the Strait of Messina, anchor current load is significant — monitor the anchor alarm closely; a 2–3 kn current through the anchorage can work even a well-set anchor loose over several hours.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free
Permit required
No

Restrictions: AMP SCOGLI D'ISCA: The rocky islets north of the bay are a small AMP. Zone A prohibits all anchoring and approach — do not anchor near or between the Scogli d'Isca islets. Standard no-Posidonia rule applies. No waste discharge in the bay.

Hazards

  • !Scirocco exposure: The bay opens to the SE — in Scirocco (SE/S) a significant swell develops quickly; depart promptly if forecast worsens
  • !Libeccio (SW): The wide opening to the SW means Libeccio also creates uncomfortable conditions; monitor forecasts carefully
  • !AMP Scogli d'Isca: The rocky islets to the N are a protected area — approach with care on charts; the area is poorly marked and the rocks break the surface at low water

Skipper's Tips

  • Use Nicotera Bay as a quiet overnight stop when heading S toward the Strait — calmer and less crowded than Tropea
  • Visit the Museo Civico di Nicotera in the hilltop town — the Magna Graecia collection includes impressive terracotta figures from the ancient Greek settlements of this coast
  • The sandy beach below the town is long, clean, and largely empty compared to Tropea — excellent swimming and snorkelling over the sand/rock boundary
  • Nicotera Bay provides a useful weather window for timing a Strait of Messina transit — wait here for the right current direction and wind forecast

Best Months & Season

May, June, July, August, September

May–September in settled weather. This is a fair-weather anchorage — avoid in S/SW wind forecasts. Uncrowded even in August compared to nearby Tropea. Good early-season (May) anchorage when Tyrrhenian conditions are generally calmer.
