Italy — Calabria & Strait of Messina

Anchorages in Calabria & the Strait of Messina

Dramatic clifftop towns, the legendary Strait of Messina, swordfishing villages, and the largest marine park in Italy. From Tropea's famous sandy beaches to the complex currents of the Strait and the crystal-clear Ionian coast — a sailing ground that rewards careful planning.

STRAIT OF MESSINA — Critical Current Warning

The Strait of Messina is one of the most dangerous passages in the Mediterranean. Currents reach 3–5 knots (up to 7 knots at springs) and reverse approximately every 6 hours — slack water lasts only 15–30 minutes. NEVER transit wind-against-current: Scirocco or Libeccio opposing the current creates violent standing waves and confused seas. Messina–Villa San Giovanni car ferries cross every 15–30 minutes — maintain clear VHF Ch 16 watch and keep well clear of the marked ferry lanes at all times.

Libeccio (W/SW) — Tyrrhenian Coast Dominant Hazard

Libeccio arrives on the Tyrrhenian Calabrian coast with little warning and can reach Force 6–7 within hours. Most anchorages from Tropea to Scilla are exposed to W and SW — always monitor the 48-hour forecast and have a shelter plan. Porto Vibo Marina is the primary refuge for the Tyrrhenian coast. On the Ionian coast, Scirocco (SE/S) is the dominant hazard — the open Ionian creates significant swell from the SE with no land shelter.

Capo Rizzuto MPA — Anchoring Zone Rules

Parco Marino Capo Rizzuto is Italy's largest marine park (36,000 ha). Zone A: no entry. Zone B: anchoring on sand only with AMP permit required — fines €500–€3,000 for violations. Zone C: general access. Contact the AMP authority before arriving: +39 0962 790 101. Posidonia anchoring (€500–€3,000 fine) is enforced by active Guardia Costiera patrols throughout the AMP in summer.
