S–W exposure across Skagafjörður means this is a fair-weather anchorage only; if wind is expected to swing to S or W, plan departure or use Sauðárkrókur harbour (12nm S) as an alternative. The 70m radius gives comfortable scope for tidal range while maintaining safety distance from the shallows inshore.
About This Anchorage
Hofsós is a tiny village of barely 200 people in one of the most spectacular positions in N Iceland — on a rocky headland on the W side of Skagafjörður with views across the fjord to the Héðinsfjörður mountains. The Vesturfarar Emigration Museum (one of the four buildings of the Skagafjörður Folk Museum) tells the story of the 14,000–20,000 Icelanders who emigrated to North America (primarily Canada — Manitoba) between 1870 and 1914; an extraordinary chapter of Icelandic history almost unknown outside Iceland and Canada. The Hofsós swimming pool is one of the most beautiful in Iceland — an infinity pool overlooking the fjord, geothermally heated, with the fjord and mountains as backdrop. Worth anchoring here for an afternoon swim alone.

Hazards
- !Skagafjörður S–W exposure: Skagafjörður runs N–S and is open to S swells from the Húnaflói and ultimately the Atlantic; in S or SW conditions the anchorage becomes untenable; monitor forecasts carefully and have a departure plan
- !Sand and gravel holding: the sand/gravel bottom requires careful anchoring — use ample scope (5:1 minimum), ensure the anchor is fully buried before setting the alarm; test the holding with engine in reverse before leaving the boat unattended
- !Shallow shoreline: the shoreline around Hofsós is rocky and shallow inside the anchorage; a dinghy landing at low water requires care — the small pier is the safest landing point
- !Limited mobile and VHF coverage: the rural Skagafjörður area has limited mobile coverage; VHF Ch. 16 remains the primary emergency communication; Icelandic Coast Guard VHF range from this position may require relay

Facilities
Very limited facilities — Hofsós has a small grocery cooperative (open limited hours), a museum cafe, and the geothermal pool. No fuel. Sauðárkrókur (12nm S) has better provisioning and fuel. For full provisioning use Akureyri (40nm E by sea).

June–August. Hofsós is best as a daytime stop during a Skagafjörður passage — the anchorage is not suitable for overnight stays in unsettled conditions. The geothermal pool and museum justify a 3–4 hour stop in any itinerary.
