About This Anchorage

Boltenhagen is the westernmost beach resort in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern — a classic Baltic spa town (Bad Boltenhagen designation, Kaiserbäder architecture) on the border with Schleswig-Holstein. The 8km beach of fine white sand is backed by the Redewisch cliffs (20m of chalk and sand). The resort was developed in the 1920s and further expanded in the GDR era as a workers' holiday destination — the large FDGB resort buildings still exist alongside newer development. The western position means Boltenhagen is the first port of call for yachts coming from Travemünde/Lübeck, or the last before Travemünde on eastward passages. The small pier harbour (Seebrücke) is very limited — the beach anchorage in settled conditions is the alternative.

Skipper's Tips

  • Boltenhagen is the natural halfway stop between Travemünde/Lübeck and Wismar/Rostock — a useful lunch anchorage or overnight in settled anticyclonic conditions
  • The Redewisch cliffs (20m chalk and sand, 3km east of the resort) are accessible by beach walk — the cliff erosion pattern is distinctive and photogenic
  • The GDR heritage of Boltenhagen is visible in the large holiday complex buildings (now privatised) — the Baltic resort culture of the workers' state has a certain period charm
  • Best conditions for the beach anchorage: SE wind, strong anticyclone, calm sea state — arrive in the early evening after the beach crowds disperse
  • From Boltenhagen, the passage west to Travemünde (22nm) or east to Wismar (15nm) can both be made in a half day's sailing in the prevailing westerly
