About This Anchorage

Ainaži (in Latvian) / Heinaste (in Estonian) is the border community between Estonia and Latvia on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Riga. The anchorage is primarily a passage stop for coastal boats making the transit between Pärnu and Riga — a route of approximately 90nm with few sheltered harbours on the Latvian shore. Ainaži itself is famous as the site of the first Latvian Maritime School (1864), founded by Krišjānis Valdemārs, the Latvian national awakening leader who argued that Latvians must control their own shipping rather than depending on Baltic German and Russian merchant fleets. The Maritime School Museum in Ainaži is one of the most interesting small museums in the eastern Baltic.

Hazards

  • !EXPOSED ANCHORAGE — very open to W, SW, NW; untenable in most westerly conditions
  • !Estonia-Latvia border area — customs considerations for non-EU vessels
  • !Gulf of Riga can produce steep 2–3m seas in strong W or SW winds
  • !Fair holding at best — do not overnight except in settled E or NE conditions

Skipper's Tips

  • Ainaži Maritime School Museum is worth a stop if passing — remarkable history of Latvian maritime education
  • This is primarily a passage waypoint — good for noting the Estonia-Latvia border crossing
  • The anchorage is only comfortable in E or NE conditions — rare in the Gulf of Riga
  • For the Estonia-Latvia coastal passage, Pärnu to Salacgrīva (Latvia) is a better route avoiding this exposed coast
  • Krišjānis Valdemārs monument in Ainaži commemorates the father of Latvian maritime culture

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 100m

In the shallow Gulf of Riga, wave heights build rapidly in strong winds. A dragging anchor can put you aground quickly. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously while you rest.
