About This Anchorage
Varna's outer roadstead marks the arrival point for most sailing vessels entering Bulgaria via the Black Sea. Varna is Bulgaria's maritime capital — home to the Naval Academy, the country's largest port, and the well-established Varna Yacht Club (founded 1903), one of the oldest sailing clubs on the Black Sea. The city is known for the Varna Gold Treasure (4600 BC), the oldest worked gold artefacts in the world, displayed at the Varna Archaeological Museum. The roadstead offers a holding point while completing entry formalities — all vessels arriving in Bulgaria must report to Customs and Border Police at Varna, regardless of EU membership. The inner harbour and marina provide much better shelter for extended stays. The famous Varna resort strip (Golden Sands, Sunny Beach) lies north and south respectively, but the city itself has remarkable cultural depth beyond the mass tourism.
