About This Anchorage

The Ropotamo River mouth is one of the most extraordinary natural destinations on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast — and one of the most beautiful river mouth anchorages on the entire western Black Sea. The Ropotamo flows through Bulgaria's best-preserved coastal forest, its course flanked by ancient oak, alder, and willow, before reaching the sea through a broad lagoon where water lilies cover the surface in summer. The river is within the Ropotamo Nature Reserve, one of Bulgaria's oldest (established 1940), protecting an ecosystem of exceptional richness: otters, wild cats, jackals, over 250 bird species, and Bulgaria's largest water lily population. Boat trips up the river (available commercially from the nearby resort) reveal a landscape of haunting beauty. The coastal anchorage outside the river mouth provides access to this exceptional nature reserve, with the forested hillsides visible from the anchorage.
