Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

80m

80m on firm North Sea sand in 3–6m. Good holding — set firmly and test with engine astern. This is exposed coast: in any NW–N conditions above F3, proceed into the locked yacht marina immediately. Tidal stream of 2–3 kt at springs will set the boat off the anchor — use 5:1 scope minimum. Increase alarm to 100m in any swell.

About This Anchorage

Nieuwpoort is the largest yacht harbour in Belgium — a massive locked marina complex at the mouth of the IJzer river holding over 2,000 berths across three marina basins (NYSM — Nieuwpoort Yacht and Sailing Marina). The town and harbour are steeped in World War I history: the Belgians opened the sluices here in 1914 to flood the IJzer plain and halt the German advance, saving the unoccupied strip of Belgium. The King Albert I Memorial (1938) on the western pier head is visible from the sea. The outer roadstead west of the entrance channel allows short-term anchoring in calm conditions or easterly winds — but the locked marina is the obvious choice for overnight. The marina is entered via a lock (Vlotkom sluis) — call Nieuwpoort Port Control on VHF 9 for lock times (generally operates every hour around HW). Excellent facilities including fuel, chandleries, restaurants, and a well-stocked yacht chandlery.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (outer roadstead); marina fee approx €25–35/night (locked basin)
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Outer roadstead: open North Sea — leave immediately in NW or N above F3; tidal stream 2–3 kt; entrance channel must be kept clear; marina entry via lock only — call VHF 9 for lock times; speed limit 5kt in harbour waters.

Hazards

  • !Fully exposed to NW–N — North Sea swell; leave outer roadstead immediately in any northerly above F3
  • !Tidal stream 2–3 kt at springs — strong cross-tide in entrance; cross tidal streams with sufficient engine power
  • !Offshore sandbanks (Kleine Banck, Stroombank) — use buoyed approach channel; do not shortcut
  • !Entrance channel is dredged — follow buoys precisely; sand shifts seasonally
  • !Lock entry to marina basin — call VHF 9 for lock schedule; locked at LW neaps

Skipper's Tips

  • Call Nieuwpoort Port Control on VHF 9 at least 30 minutes before desired lock time — the lock operates approximately every hour near HW; call ahead to confirm
  • The King Albert I Memorial on the west pier is open for visits — the panoramic view over the coast and the IJzer estuary from the tower is outstanding
  • Nieuwpoort is the best-equipped yacht harbour on the Belgian coast — fuel, chandleries, marine engineers, and haul-out are all here
  • The De Panne anchorage (4nm SW) can be a useful overnight in strong E conditions if the Nieuwpoort marina lock is not operating — check tides before attempting
  • IJzer river passage: the locked basin opens into the IJzer river — it is possible to navigate upriver to Diksmuide (12km, flood tide) in a shallow-draught boat

Best Months & Season

May, June, July, August, September

May–September. The North Sea coast is technically navigable year-round but winter conditions (F6–F8 common October–March) make the outer anchorage impractical. The marina is open year-round. Summer prevailing winds are SW–W F3–F4 with frequent unsettled periods.

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 80m

On the Belgian coast, 4–5m tidal range and 2–3 kt tidal streams make anchor drag a real overnight risk. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously.
