Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

75m

75m alarm radius for 4–10m depth on sand in Freeman Bay. Good holding but NE exposure exists — set firmly and run engine test. During Sailing Week, harbour is crowded; reduce to 60m to avoid swinging into neighbours. In any NE swell, consider relocating inside or to Falmouth.

About This Anchorage

English Harbour is one of the most celebrated anchorages in the Caribbean — a perfectly sheltered natural harbour that has been the centre of British naval power in the Leeward Islands since the early 18th century. Nelson's Dockyard, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2016), occupies the inner harbour and remains the only continuously working Georgian-era dockyard in the world. Admiral Horatio Nelson was stationed here 1784–1787 as a young captain — the dockyard's brick buildings, capstans, copper and lumber stores, and officers' quarters are preserved in extraordinary condition. Today the dockyard is also a working yacht marina with 30 stern-to berths, chandlery, showers, restaurants, and the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel. Shirley Heights, the former British military signal station overlooking the harbour, hosts the legendary Sunday Sunset BBQ (every Sunday 4pm–late) — one of the best social gatherings in the Eastern Caribbean, with steel pan, reggae, and rum punch as the sun drops over Montserrat.

Restrictions: No anchoring on coral — sand only; anchoring inside inner harbour not permitted (marina berths only); Q flag on arrival until cleared; Port Health boards vessel FIRST before any other clearance; Antigua Sailing Week (late April): book 6+ months ahead; no discharge of waste in harbour.

Hazards

  • !Port Health clearance mandatory FIRST on arrival — vessel cannot be left unattended until cleared; crew must remain aboard
  • !Coral throughout approach channel — use current chart; eyeball navigation in clear water at low sun angle hazardous
  • !Antigua Sailing Week (late April/early May): harbour dangerously crowded — give vessels adequate swinging room; reduced alarm radius essential
  • !NE exposure in Freeman Bay — easterly swell can enter in winter; if uncomfortable, move to inner harbour berth or Falmouth
  • !National Park anchoring fees apply — pay promptly or risk fine

Skipper's Tips

  • Shirley Heights Sunday BBQ is unmissable — dinghy ashore at Nelson's Dockyard and take the trail up (or taxi); starts 4pm, steel band until 7pm, reggae until late
  • Clear in at English Harbour or Falmouth — the Port Health officer will come to your boat; have passports, ship's papers, crew list, and zarpe from last port ready
  • Nelson's Dockyard Museum (in the old Boat House) tells the harbour's full naval history — essential context before exploring
  • Freeman Bay has the best holding — anchor in the NW part of the bay for maximum shelter from NE trades
  • The Pillars of Hercules (dramatic twin rock columns at the harbour entrance) are a photogenic waypoint on approach — stay clear of the rocks below water level
