Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

70m

70m for good holding on sand in 3–8m. Northeast-facing coast — ENE trades blow directly into the bay; in trade winds above 15kt the anchorage can be choppy to uncomfortable. Best for day stops and staging for Buck Island in settled morning conditions. Monitor conditions carefully before overnight commitment.

About This Anchorage

Teague Bay on St. Croix's east coast is a relatively exposed anchorage on the island's northeast-facing coast — positioned closest to Buck Island Reef National Monument (approximately 3nm to the northeast) and therefore a natural staging point for an early morning Buck Island departure. The bay has good sand holding and the Reef Golf Course Club is located on the adjacent shore. The northeast exposure means the ENE trade winds blow directly into the bay, and conditions can be choppy in strong trades. Teague Bay is better suited to brief daytime stops and Buck Island staging than extended overnight stays. The east coast location gives good access to the eastern tip of St. Croix and the views toward Buck Island and the open Caribbean are spectacular.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free anchoring in sand

No

Restrictions: Anchor only in sand — reef on the approach from the north; monitor trade wind conditions; open northeast-facing anchorage unsuitable for overnight in strong trades.

Hazards

  • !Northeast exposure to trade winds — ENE trades create uncomfortable and potentially rough conditions in the anchorage in winds above 15kt
  • !Reef on northern approach — approach from the south; reef heads visible in clear water but use chart and lookout
  • !Open roadstead — not suitable for overnight stays in strong trade wind conditions; depart if trades increase
  • !Remote from services — Christiansted is 7nm west by sea; carry all provisions

Skipper's Tips

  • Teague Bay is the closest anchorage to Buck Island — anchor here in the afternoon, watch the sunset, and depart for Buck Island at 07:00 the next morning
  • The Reef Golf Course Club bar is a classic old-school St. Croix institution — cold drinks and a view of the fairways
  • Buck Island is clearly visible to the northeast from Teague Bay — a 3nm sail in trade wind conditions is quick and straightforward
  • Monitor VHF 16 for NPS Buck Island ranger information about mooring ball availability before departing
  • The east coast of St. Croix (east of Christiansted) is rarely visited by cruising boats — peaceful anchorages with excellent local character
