Crookhaven is one of the finest natural anchorages in the British Isles — a long, sheltered inlet on the Mizen Peninsula of SW Cork, formed by a narrow neck of land that creates a near-landlocked harbour with outstanding holding. The small community of Crookhaven village has a legendary sailing pub (O'Sullivan's Bar) and a remarkable atmosphere of benign remoteness. This was the landing point of the first transatlantic wireless telegraph signal received in Ireland (Guglielmo Marconi's station operated here in the early 1900s). The Fastnet Rock (11nm south) is visible in clear conditions. Crookhaven is the traditional last anchorage before crossing to France or Spain, and the first port of call for yachts arriving from offshore.

Anchor Zones
Crookhaven — main anchorage in the harbour
Excellent2–5m · Alarm: 75m
Anchor in 2–4m (CD) in the sheltered harbour. Mud and sand throughout — excellent holding. The harbour is almost landlocked and provides outstanding shelter from virtually all directions. Tidal range approximately 3.0–3.5m springs. One of the finest natural harbours in SW Ireland. Very popular with cruising yachts — can be busy in July–August. Anchor well clear of local moorings and the approach to O'Sullivan's pub quay.
Setting Your Anchor Alarm
75m radius for the sheltered harbour. The holding is excellent and the shelter is outstanding. The NW is the only exposed direction but this is partially sheltered by high ground. With 3.5m tidal range at springs, actual depths at HW reach 5.5–8.5m — ensure scope is sufficient for the full tidal cycle.
Recommended radius: 75m
