Anstruther (pronounced 'Ainster') is the principal village of the East Neuk of Fife — Scotland's most charming coastal region, a string of historic fishing villages on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. The town is home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum (one of Scotland's finest museums), the ferry to the Isle of May (puffin colony and nature reserve), and a legendary fish and chip shop. The Bass Rock (7nm SW, 150,000 northern gannets — the world's largest colony) is visible on clear days. The East Neuk is a beautiful sailing area — the combination of historic harbours, East Neuk stone buildings and the dramatic Firth of Forth scenery makes it distinctive. Edinburgh (30nm west) is accessible by bus.

Anchor Zones

Anstruther Harbour — outer harbour anchorage

Good

13m · Alarm: 60m

Anchor in 1–3m (CD) in the outer harbour, keeping clear of the inner basin reserved for the Scottish Fisheries Museum and local boats. Sand and mud — good holding. The outer harbour provides shelter from the N and W but is exposed to E/NE. Tidal range approximately 4.5–5.0m springs (Firth of Forth tides are larger than the open coast). The harbour dries at LW springs in the outer areas — plan tidal access carefully. Very popular with visiting yachts in summer.

Setting Your Anchor Alarm

60m radius for the harbour. With 4.5–5.0m tidal range (Firth of Forth), actual depths at HW reach 5.5–8m in the outer harbour. The E/NE exposure means the harbour is uncomfortable in easterlies — Pittenweem (1nm W) has slightly better E shelter. The modest depths at CD mean entry/departure timing is critical at spring LW.

Recommended radius: 60m

Hazards & Warnings

  • !Harbour dries at LW springs — enter near HW; tidal range 4.5–5.0m is significant
  • !E and NE exposure — North Sea easterlies make the harbour entrance rough; do not attempt entry in heavy E swell
  • !Tidal streams in the Firth of Forth reach 2–3 kt at springs — plan passages accordingly, particularly around Fife Ness
  • !Fife Ness (5nm E) — exposed headland with overfalls at springs; transit near slack water

Skipper's Tips

  • Anstruther Fish Bar is genuinely one of the best fish and chip shops in the UK — queue is long in summer but worth every minute
  • Scottish Fisheries Museum is outstanding — the story of Scottish fishing from Viking times to the present; allow 2 hours
  • Isle of May ferry (seasonal) — the island's puffin colony is extraordinary; book the ferry in advance (isleofmayferry.com)
  • Bass Rock (7nm SW) — sailing past the rock during the gannet breeding season (April–August) is a truly overwhelming experience
  • Pittenweem (1nm W), Crail (6nm E) and St Monans (3nm W) are all beautiful East Neuk villages worth visiting
