Passage East is a charming whitewashed village on the west bank of Waterford Harbour — a beautiful and historic anchorage at the gateway to the Three Sisters rivers (Suir, Nore and Barrow). The village has a car ferry crossing to Ballyhack (Hook Peninsula) and is a classic cruising stop on the SE Ireland coast. The mudflats and estuary are outstanding for birdwatching. Dunmore East (5nm south) is a picturesque fishing village with excellent seafood restaurants. Waterford City (9nm upriver) is Ireland's oldest city, founded by the Vikings in 914 AD — its Viking Triangle heritage district and Waterford Crystal are major attractions. The estuary is a significant commercial waterway — Waterford Port handles container and bulk carrier traffic.

Passage East — estuary anchorage off the village
Excellent3–7m · Alarm: 80m
Anchor in 3–6m (CD) off Passage East village on the west bank of Waterford Harbour. Deep mud throughout — outstanding holding. The estuary provides good shelter from the E/S/SW. Tidal range approximately 2.8m springs. Strong tidal stream in the main channel (2–3 kt springs) — anchor well into the bay clear of the fairway. Commercial vessels navigate the estuary regularly — maintain VHF watch on Ch 16. The Passage East car ferry crosses from east to west bank; keep clear of the ferry lane.
Setting Your Anchor Alarm
80m radius for the estuary anchorage. The tidal stream at springs (2–3 kt) means the boat will lie to the tide rather than the wind — allow for this in scope calculation. Mud holding is excellent. With 2.8m tidal range, actual depths at HW reach 5.8–9.8m; plan rode accordingly. The car ferry lane (Passage East–Ballyhack) crosses the anchorage area — anchor clear of the ferry lane and monitor its movements.
Recommended radius: 80m
