Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

75m

75m for good holding on sand in 2–5m. The 0.6–0.9m tidal range at Grand Turk means this shallow anchorage requires careful tidal monitoring — at low tide the inner areas approach 1.5m depth. Best as a daytime visit; return to the main Cockburn Town Roads anchorage for overnight stays. The northern and western exposure means this anchorage should not be used in any northerly or westerly conditions.

About This Anchorage

Governor's Beach is widely considered Grand Turk's most beautiful beach — a crescent of pristine white sand fronting the historic Governor's Residence (an elegant colonial building set back from the shore). The beach is almost always uncrowded — when cruise ships are not in port (the majority of the time), the beach is as close to deserted as one can find in the Caribbean. The water off the beach is exceptional — clear, turquoise, and with good snorkelling on the reef patches just offshore. The anchorage is best used as a daytime stop for beach access; the northern and western exposure makes overnight stays unreliable in the Turks Island region where northers are a real hazard January–March. The Governor's Residence behind the beach adds historical interest — the colonial-era building is a reminder of TCI's British heritage.

Restrictions: Shallow area — tidal awareness critical; Governor's Residence grounds — respect the property boundary; no anchoring on coral patches.

Hazards

  • !Multiple exposure directions — only suitable in settled E/SE trade conditions
  • !Very shallow at low water — 0.6–0.9m tidal range means 1.5m depth at low tide in inner anchorage
  • !Cruise ship day traffic — when ships are in port, the beach and adjacent water can be crowded
  • !No overnight shelter — return to Cockburn Town Roads for overnight

Skipper's Tips

  • Time your visit to Governor's Beach for days when no cruise ships are scheduled — the beach is extraordinarily beautiful and completely empty
  • Check the Carnival/Royal Caribbean schedule online before planning your Grand Turk visit — cruise days see 3,000+ visitors on the island
  • The snorkelling off the beach on the reef patches is good — fish life is excellent compared to more heavily trafficked sites
  • Walk south from Governor's Beach to explore the undeveloped south end of the island — deserted and wild

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 75m

In the Turks Islands, open roadstead anchorages with 0.6–0.9m tidal range and strong Turks Island Passage current mean careful monitoring is essential. Safety Anchor Alarm keeps watch while you sleep.
