Mordoğan Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Mordogan, Mordoğan Bay, Mordoğan Limanı

Mordoğan is a traditional fishing village on the north side of the Karaburun Peninsula, connected to the mainland by road. The bay is well-sheltered from the dominant NW meltemi winds by surrounding hills, making it a reliable overnight stop for boats passage-making along the Karaburun Peninsula. The village has a small fishing harbour, basic provisions, and a few local restaurants serving excellent fresh fish. The pace of life here is traditional and unhurried — a welcome contrast to the busy resorts of Çeşme.

The Anchorage

Anchor NW of the fishing harbour in 5–8m on sand and mud. Good shelter from NW/W meltemi from the hills on the north side of the bay. Keep clear of the fishing boat moorings. The small harbour has a concrete quay with limited berths for visiting yachts — check with local fishermen on VHF 16.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Mordoğan is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 510m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (70m chain at 10m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta, Spade. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

  • Limited fuel availability — top up at Çeşme before heading south

  5. Road connection to İzmir makes this a practical crew-change point if needed

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
