About This Anchorage

Caraorman is one of the most remote villages in the Danube Delta — its name, meaning 'Black Forest' in Turkish, reflects the ancient oak and willow forest that dominates the island on which it stands. The village is accessible only by water and has a tiny permanent population of Lipovan fishermen. The Caraorman forest is remarkable: a remnant of ancient European lowland forest surviving on the delta island, home to deer, wild boar, and a rich birdlife. The sand dunes at Caraorman — a geological oddity in this otherwise flat, marshy landscape — rise to 8 metres and are visible for miles. These dunes, formed thousands of years ago and now partially stabilised by forest, are a UNESCO-protected feature of the delta. Arriving at Caraorman by boat through the narrow willow-lined canal, with herons and egrets lining the banks, is one of the most memorable experiences the Danube Delta offers.
