Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

80m

80m in 4–12m on excellent mud. Outstanding holding. W/NW/SW exposure to Vestfjorden is the primary concern — the outer anchorage is untenable in any westerly system. Hurtigruten and car ferry traffic operates continuously from Svolvær — maintain AIS and good watch.

About This Anchorage

Svolvær is the main town and commercial hub of Lofoten — the best-provisioned port in the island chain and the natural base for exploring the entire archipelago. The town itself is less characterful than Henningsvær or Nusfjord but the facilities are unmatched: full marine services, a comprehensive supermarket, fuel dock, chandlery, and the best restaurants in Lofoten. The Svolværgeita twin-summit peaks (591m) rise with astonishing abruptness directly above the harbour — climbers ascend these every summer day. The Magic Ice gallery, the Lofoten War Memorial Museum and the North Norwegian Artist Centre are all in the town. An essential provisioning stop for any Lofoten sailing trip.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free (anchoring); Marina fee for guest harbour berths
Permit required
No

Restrictions: Allemannsretten applies. Keep clear of the Hurtigruten and car ferry dock approaches — large vessels have right of way and operate continuously. VHF Ch. 16 for harbour master. No discharge of waste. AIS recommended in the harbour approaches.

Hazards

  • !Hurtigruten and ferry traffic: Svolvær is a major Hurtigruten port — the coastal express and car ferries create significant wash in the harbour approaches; stay clear of the ferry lanes
  • !W/NW Vestfjorden exposure: the outer anchorage is exposed to westerly systems; move to the marina or inner harbour in any W forecast
  • !Katabatic winds from Svolværgeita: even in the town harbour, the nearby peaks generate katabatic drainage overnight — ensure marina berth lines are well-doubled
  • !July crowds: Svolvær is the busiest port in Lofoten in July — marina fills daily; call ahead on VHF or arrive early

Skipper's Tips

  • Provisioning base: use Svolvær as the main restock stop for a Lofoten circuit — the Coop supermarket is the best-stocked in the island chain and fuel is available at the dock
  • Svolværgeita guided climb: local guide companies offer ascents of the twin peaks — the view looking down into the harbour and across Lofoten from the summits is incomparable
  • Lofoten War Memorial Museum: a fascinating and sobering account of the Allied Lofoten Raids of 1941 — one of WWII's most daring commando operations launched from these islands
  • Magic Ice gallery: the permanent ice sculpture gallery is unexpectedly remarkable and good for a rainy afternoon in the Arctic summer
