70m on Oosterschelde mud and clay in 2–6m. Tidal range 2–2.5m — use 5:1 scope and allow for significant tidal swing. Tidal streams 2–3kt in main channels — anchor in designated areas well clear of channel edges. The deep clay gives superb holding once the anchor is set.

About This Anchorage

The Oosterschelde is the largest national park in the Netherlands — 37,000 hectares of tidal estuary protected as Natura 2000. Unlike the Grevelingenmeer (non-tidal), the Oosterschelde retains its full tidal character because the Oosterscheldekering (storm surge barrier, 1986) was designed to preserve the estuary ecology while protecting against flooding. The result is the finest marine nature reserve in the Netherlands: superb underwater visibility (4–6m), soft corals, seahorses, lobsters, and enormous populations of shellfish (Yerseke oysters and mussels). The open water anchorages in the Zijpe and Kats areas provide genuine Zeeland estuary anchoring — tidal streams, depth changes, and the drama of anchoring in a living tidal system with the Oosterscheldekering visible on the horizon. The sandbanks (platen) that dry at low water provide resting areas for seals and thousands of wading birds.

Anchoring Rules

Anchoring fee
Free in designated areas
Permit required
No

Restrictions: National park — anchor only in designated zones (ANWB waterkaart); no anchoring on or near shellfish beds (marked); tidal streams 2–3kt in main channels — anchor clear of channels; nature reserve zones closed (Natura 2000, April–August for breeding); no powered water sports in sensitive zones; approach the Oosterscheldekering barrier from south only (navigation prohibited near barrier gates).

Hazards

  • !Tidal streams 2–3kt in main channels — anchor strictly in designated areas; vessels in the stream can drag to dangerous positions
  • !Tidal range 2–2.5m — depth changes significantly between HW and LW; check depths carefully and allow adequate scope
  • !Shellfish beds (marked with posts and buoys) — anchoring in beds prohibited; beds extend across significant areas of the estuary
  • !Sandbanks (platen) — dry at LW; marked on ANWB waterkaart but positions can shift; navigate in daylight only in unfamiliar areas
  • !National park enforcement — wardens patrol by fast RIB; fines for anchoring outside designated areas

Skipper's Tips

  • Diving in the Oosterschelde is the finest in the Netherlands — the tidal currents bring nutrient-rich water that supports soft corals, sponges, and diverse marine life; dive on slack water (HW or LW) for best conditions
  • The Oosterscheldekering storm surge barrier (10nm west) is navigable by yacht between the pillars — the scale of the structure (8km long, 65 massive gates) is extraordinary from water level
  • Seal colonies rest on the sandbanks at low water — observable with binoculars from the anchorage without disturbance
  • The estuary at night in summer is phosphorescent — disturbing the water with a hand or oar produces blue-green light from dinoflagellates
  • Plan passages in the Oosterschelde with tidal timing — use the flood stream to move east and the ebb to move west; the Zijpe narrows (Grevelingenmeer to Oosterschelde) has particularly strong streams

Facilities

Water Fuel Restaurant Provisions WiFi

No facilities at open anchorage. Zierikzee (8nm), Yerseke (10nm), and Colijnsplaat have full facilities. Diving equipment can be hired at Yerseke and Zierikzee.

Best Months & Season

May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep

May–September. The Oosterschelde is at its best in May–June (spring tides bring the most spectacular ebb exposures of the sandbanks) and September (quieter, excellent diving visibility). July–August is the busiest period with the most recreational boat traffic.
