About This Anchorage

Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland province and one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the Netherlands. The town was devastated by German bombing in 1940 (along with the famous Stadhuis / town hall) but was meticulously rebuilt to the original Gothic plans using historical photographs. The Zeeuws Museum (Zealand Museum) in the former abbey complex is outstanding — covering the Delta Works, Zeeland history, and the famous 17th-century tapestries. The town is reached by yacht via the Kanaal door Walcheren — a 9km canal from Vlissingen through the Walcheren polder landscape, with locks at each end. The inner harbour quay puts visitors in the centre of the old city: the abbey towers, weekly market (Thursday), and excellent restaurants within 200m. The town is a UNESCO candidate for the Zeeland canal ring.

  • !Commercial barges in canal — narrow sections require careful passing

Skipper's Tips

  • The Zeeuws Museum (Abbey square) is unmissable — the 17th-century tapestries depicting the sea battles against Spain are extraordinary; allow 2 hours
  • The Stadhuis (Town Hall) on the Markt is the most elaborate Gothic building in Zeeland — rebuilt stone by stone after 1940 bombing using original plans
  • Thursday market (Markt square, 08:00–13:00) — fresh provincial produce including Zeeland oysters, mussels, and local cheeses
  • The Walcheren Canal route from Vlissingen provides a unique experience — cycling the towpath alongside while the yacht transits is a Dutch classic
  • From Middelburg, the Veerse Meer is accessible via the Veerse Meer lock (north of city) — connecting to the main Zeeland sailing lakes
