65m

65m on Zandkreek sand and mud in 2–3.5m. No tidal swing (Veerse Meer, non-tidal). W and NW exposure across the full 22km length of Veerse Meer. In strong westerlies, the marina provides full shelter. The Zandkreek lock to Oosterschelde is immediately adjacent.

About This Anchorage

Kortgene is a small, quiet marina village on Noord-Beveland at the eastern end of the Veerse Meer — the least-visited end of this popular sailing lake. The Zandkreek lock, immediately adjacent to the Kortgene marina, is the connection between the non-tidal Veerse Meer and the tidal Oosterschelde — a strategically important navigation junction for Zeeland cruising circuits. Noord-Beveland is a flat agricultural island with a distinctive Zeeland character — polders, farmhouses, and the flat horizon. The marina at Kortgene is well-maintained and significantly quieter than the Veerse Meer marinas closer to Veere — ideal for sailors who want access to both the lake and the estuary without the crowds. The cycling routes around Noord-Beveland (35km circuit) pass through working polder farms and the delta landscape.

Restrictions: Zandkreek lock — check operating hours before planning passage to Oosterschelde (VHF 22); Veerse Meer approach from west: speed limit 9km/h; ANWB waterkaart essential; designated anchorage areas only in Zandkreek bay; windsurfing zones on Veerse Meer — respect designated areas.

Hazards

  • !Zandkreek lock operating hours — limited opening times; call VHF 22 before planning passage to Oosterschelde
  • !W and NW fetch across 22km Veerse Meer — significant chop in strong westerlies; use marina in strong W conditions
  • !Tidal Oosterschelde on east side of lock — 2–2.5m tidal range; plan timing when exiting through Zandkreek
  • !Limited fuel in Kortgene — plan fuel stops at Veere (12nm) or in Middelburg

Skipper's Tips

  • Kortgene is the ideal base for a Zeeland circuit combining both Veerse Meer (non-tidal, easy) and Oosterschelde (tidal, dramatic) — lock through at HW for the best timing
  • The cycling circuit around Noord-Beveland (35km) is one of the most scenic in Zeeland — flat polder landscape with delta views in all directions
  • The Zandkreek lock is much less busy than the main Veerse Meer western locks — shorter waiting times in peak season
  • Combine Kortgene with a dinghy excursion into the Oosterschelde (east of the lock) to see the sandbanks and seal colonies without committing the main boat to a tidal anchorage
  • The eastern Veerse Meer anchorage bays near Kortgene are the least crowded on the lake — in peak season (July–August) when the western bays are full, sail east for space
