About This Anchorage
Urk is one of the most culturally distinctive communities in the Netherlands — a devout Protestant fishing village that was an island until 1942, when the Noordoostpolder reclamation connected it to the mainland for the first time. The village still has its own dialect (Urks), traditional costume worn by older residents, and a deeply conservative fishing culture. The harbour is the largest freshwater fishing harbour in the Netherlands — IJsselmeer pike-perch, perch, eel, and smelt. The lighthouse (1844) on the rocky outcrop of the original island commands views across the full IJsselmeer. The churchyard contains a remarkable war memorial — the fishing fleet monument listing every Urker fisherman lost at sea. The village has a distinct atmosphere unlike any other Dutch port — visitors are welcomed but the community's character is authentic and unchanged.

Skipper's Tips
- →Fresh smoked IJsselmeer eel (gerookte paling) from the harbour fish shops — the finest eel in the Netherlands; Urk fishermen have smoked eel for generations
- →The lighthouse (1844) on the rocky outcrop is the highest point in the area — 30-minute walk from harbour; views across to the Afsluitdijk on a clear day
- →The fishermen's monument in the churchyard lists every Urker lost at sea — a deeply moving record of a maritime community's sacrifice
- →The Urks dialect and traditional costume (worn by older women) are a living piece of Dutch history — a respectful observation of a community preserving its heritage
- →The IJsselmeer crossing from Hoorn or Enkhuizen to Urk (15–20nm) is the main passage on the lake — plan for weather and note that conditions can change quickly on the open lake
