Important Warnings — Luštica Peninsula & Tivat Bay
- South Luštica coves exposed to SW swell: Žanjic, Mirišta, Ploče, and Plavi Horizonti all face S or SW and are exposed to open-sea swell in strong SW conditions. Use these anchorages only in settled weather. The afternoon Maestral (W thermal, F3–4) is manageable; any Jugo or SW swell system requires immediate departure for Tivat Bay or Bigova.
- Žanjic and Mirišta crowded Jul–Aug: These popular south coast coves fill completely by midday in July–August. Arrive before 10:00 for a suitable position. Porto Montenegro superyacht wash can reach south coast anchorages unexpectedly — keep anchor alarm active.
- €89 cruising permit required: All foreign yachts must purchase the Montenegro vignette at first port of entry. Tivat is a designated port of entry — Porto Montenegro has customs facilities. Always check current permit requirements.
- Tivat airport traffic: Aircraft on approach to Tivat airport fly directly over the E part of Tivat Bay. Noise factor, especially during daytime operations.
- Superyacht wash from Porto Montenegro: Large superyachts transiting Tivat Bay create sudden significant wash. Keep anchor alarm active in all Tivat Bay anchorages.
About the Luštica Peninsula & Tivat Bay
Wild South Coast vs Sheltered Bay
The Luštica Peninsula creates a dramatic contrast: the south-facing coast has the wildest, clearest anchorages in Montenegro — Mirišta, Žanjic, and Ploče are beautiful open-sea coves with spectacular swimming in settled weather. Turn the corner into Tivat Bay and the picture reverses: sheltered mud anchorages, Porto Montenegro's superyacht facilities, and complete Bora protection from the surrounding mountains.
Porto Montenegro
Porto Montenegro is the Adriatic's most prestigious superyacht marina — 481 berths, 16m water depth, vessels up to 250m LOA, and a full range of marine services, restaurants, and retail. VHF Ch 69. Berth fees €100–200+/night. Free anchoring off Tivat town quay on the SE side of the bay is a budget alternative within dinghy distance of Porto Montenegro's services.
Tivat — Port of Entry
Tivat is one of four official Montenegro ports of entry for foreign yachts. The cruising vignette (from ~€89/month) can be purchased here — Porto Montenegro has customs facilities. This makes Tivat the natural base for exploring both the Luštica south coast coves and the inner Bay of Kotor system. Always check current permit requirements.
Stoliv & Prčanj — Inner Bay Jewels
The E coast of the Kotor Bay arm (Stoliv, Prčanj, Dobrota) fronts a series of extraordinary Baroque waterfronts built by the seafaring merchant families of old Kotor. Stoliv — with its stone village terraced into the hillside and the Lovćen massif above — is widely considered the most beautiful anchorage in the entire Bay of Kotor. Anchor here with excellent mud holding and no facilities: pure Montenegro.
